Rick Blum, Director
Rick joined News Media for Open Government (formerly Sunshine in Government Initiative) in 2006. Over the years Rick has helped the coalition actively support efforts to strengthen the federal Freedom of Information Act, raise awareness of the value and impact of FOIA, and find commonsense solutions to FOIA’s limits. He led efforts to push back against anti-disclosure proposals on issues ranging from “space situation awareness” (“tracking space junk” to us laypeople) to high-speed rail. In 2012, he helped the coalition defeat sweeping anti-leaks proposals. He has testified before Congress several times on FOIA matters. In March 2016, Rick was inducted into the Freedom of Information Act Hall of Fame.
He holds a master’s degree from Indiana University, where his studies focused on democratization efforts in Russia, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. He lives in Silver Spring, Maryland.
