Government Records Show Crop Insurance Subsidies Are A Boon To Big Farm Interests
Environmental Working Group
Large agricultural operations disproportionately benefit from federal crop insurance subsidies. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) used FOIA to obtain over a million never-before-released records from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Of almost half a million 2011 policyholders, over 10,000 received federal crop insurance premium subsidies of over $100,000, while 26 received over $1 million - but the recipients' identities remain secret.
The EWG report is available online at http://static.ewg.org/pdf/2012cropinsurance.pdf.
